Dirham (Silver, 20 mm, 1.39 g, 2 h), al-Mawsil, date ilegible. ‘lā ilāha illā Allāh / waḥdahū lā sharīka lahū / Muḥammad rasūl Allāh’ (‘There is no deity but Allah, the One, there is no partner to Him. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah’ in Arabic); traces of the mint and date formula in the margin. Rev. ‘qāʾān / al-aʿẓam / Hūlākū īlkhān / al-muʿẓẓam’ (‘The supreme Khan; Hulagu, the great Ilkhan’ in Arabic); ‘The supreme Khan’ refers to Hulagu’s overlord, the Great Mongol Möngke (AH 649-657 / AD 1251-1259). The word at the bottom of the reverse field is read as ‘kharīz’ (‘protected’) by Diler, but it can also be read as ‘Jarīr’ (a Personal name). In the margin, traces of ‘allāhumma mālik al-mulk tuʾtī al-mulk man tashāʾ wa tanziʿu al-mulk mimman tashāʾ (‘O Allah, Owner of the Kingdom! Thou givest the kingdom to whomsoever Thou pleasest and takest away the kingdom from whomsoever Thou pleasest’ in Arabic; Qurʾān 3: 26). Album 2122.2.
